Choosing a Broadhead

John from Illinois asks,

Hi Bill, I hope you and your family had a Happy Thanksgiving. My name is John and my family and I are long time fans and have appreciated your willingness to share your experiences and knowledge with us over the years. My questions are related to broadheads. What broadhead are you using now that you don't have a specific sponsor? Second part, why did you choose that broadhead over others? Thank you. Have a great week. John

Choosing a Broadhead

After much testing and hunting experiences, I have shot small cutting diameter mechanical heads exclusively since 1996. I like them because they fly very accurately and penetrate really well.

John,

Thanks. We did have a great Thanksgiving. I hope you did also.

Regarding broadheads: I had some Rocket Steelheads laying around that were leftover from the days when I shot them religiously, so I have been using them up. Once they are gone I will go back to the smaller Wasp Jak-Hammers. I like small cutting diameter mechanical heads for two reasons.

1. They fly really well and are as accurate as field points. That is important. The first step in making a clean kill is hitting the spot you are aiming at.

2. They penetrate well. Believe it or not, these small cutting diameter (1 1/4 inch, roughly) mechanicals penetrate as well as any three-blade fixed blade head on the market. I have done the testing myself to prove this – using a shooting machine and a variety of different target media.

Of course, two-blade cut on impact heads will out-penetrate anything else out there, so there is no real debate about that.

It will take a lot to convince me that there are better heads on the market for whitetails than these small cutting diameter mechanical heads that I have been using since 1996.  Have a great day. (11/30/21)

    Hi Bill,
Just saw your video “Why I Shoot Mechanical Broadheads” is there a minimum poundage you would recommend for shooting mechanicals? I have a 28-inch draw and shoot 50lbs.

      Steve,

I don’t like the big mechanical heads with cutting diameters over 1 1/2 inches. I think that with the smaller ones (1 1/2 inches and less) you would be fine even with a 40 pound bow. They do penetrate well.
