Hunting Swamps

Travis from MI asks,

I have a lot of white cedar swamp on my property. U ever hunt in swamps or would you recommend hunting the edges? I ended up making a land bridge through the swamp to connect the property and planted it to clovers and grass. Would you hunt on that like a travel corridor?

Hunting Swamps

If you have a way to get to and from your stands in the swamp without the deer knowing and a wind direction that lets you hunt it undetected, there is no reason not to go right into the best stands in a swamp.

Travis,

I have not hunted swamps much, but I have hunted around them – in Michigan as is your home property.

I think you hunt all the parts of your property that you can without alerting the deer. In other words, that land bridge sounds awesome. I am guessing lots of deer use it. I would definitely hunt it as long as there was a wind direction and an entry and exit route that you can use without the deer knowing it. If there isn’t, you can’t hunt it and you need to stick with the fringes of the swamp (maybe even the fringes of your property).

It all comes down to keeping the deer from knowing that they are being hunted.  That is the key.  Hunt any and all spots that set up that well for undetected hunting and avoid all others – no matter how good they look.  Often, this means hunting the fringes of your hunting area and avoiding the middle, but sometimes you have a perfect entry and exit route that allows you to hunt the middle too.

Every situation is different and being creative to solve this challenge is the true fun of deer hunting.  Good luck. (6/27/22)
