I took a great buck in late October. Interestingly, this buck had not been showing any daylight activity on my trail camera so I had limited expectation of him coming out during legal shooting time, but a nice cool front and the closeness of the impending rut got him out in time. We had filmed this buck in the same spot two years earlier but he had completely disappeared during the intervening year. It was rare for me to have a buck disappear for a year and then show back up. So, if you have one disappear, there is still hope. I thought he was 5 years old when I shot him, but the cementum annuli tooth aging came back as 4 years old. Either they got it wrong (doubtful) or I killed a buck that would have been an absolute giant in another year. I am not sure I would have let him go even if I had known he was just four years old. But, boy it would have been interesting to see what he grew into!
