Whether I Would Have Sold if there was a Giant Buck on the Farm

Casey from Kansas asks,

Bill, I’ve followed you for years, and even remember the ‘semi-live versions’ of watching your saga for the G5 and double G4 bucks unfold. I was able to catch your recent podcast with HUNTR, which was inspiring, so I understand the decision to reset, for yourself and to see your folks more. Would you have made the same decision to detour if you had another buck of the same caliber at the double G4 buck on the farm, or perhaps, simply upped the asking price of your farm? - just kidding! Looking forward to Bill Winke version 2.0 as you re-emerge in the future and attain a better work/life balance. Praying for your continued success, Casey

Giant Buck

If there had been a buck like this on the farm when I sold it, I definitely would not have sold it! Deer like this are incredibly special and I would have hunted him until I killed him or he died of other causes.

Casey,

I appreciate the support. Thanks very much. I think I would have kept the farm until I killed the buck or it died of natural causes. Bucks like that don’t come around very often (maybe once in a lifetime) so I am guessing I would have kept the farm.

We didn’t have to sell the farm to move closer to parents. We would have eventually moved anyway, but I would not have sold the property so soon.

Financially, that would have worked out better as the prices have shot up since I sold, but hindsight is 20/20.

I had intended to immediately replace the farm with another one closer to mom and dad, but that didn’t work out. I can hunt up there (and do) but I just don’t own land at this time.  Maybe some day.

The longer I go without owning, the less I think about it. Not sure how badly I want to dive deep into debt again at this point.

Great quality hunting land is not very risky to own.  You should be able to sell it reasonably quickly if you get into trouble financially as there always seems to be a buyer out there for quality. But, living with a mound of debt is stressful – I would have to take that step carefully now.

Time will tell on what I do in that regard.  Have a great day. (6/19/21)
