scott from fl asks,
Bill, What do you think the range of a mature buck is?
Bill responds,
Topic: Size of a Mature Buck’s Range:
Scott,
That is a very good question. I have been pondering that for a few decades now! To be serious, every buck is different. Some are homebodies and others are roamers, but as a general rule, the older they get, the smaller their range becomes. The Double G4 buck was an example of that. His range kept getting smaller every year past four. I killed him when he was seven and by then I think he was living in just 30 to 40 acres total. That may be the extreme on the small range side, but I know of others that have compressed down nearly to that level.
But, there have been other bucks I have hunted that covered much more ground as senior citizens. Bubba was an example of that. He was really hard to hunt because he seemed to live in about a two square mile area even as a seven year old.
So, it is impossible to say what every mature buck will do, but I can give tendencies. Their ranges tend to shrink as they get older and could be as small as just 30 acres. Good luck. (4/13/21)
