Hunting Swamps

Hunting Swamps
I have a lot of white cedar swamp on my property. U ever hunt in swamps or would you recommend hunting the edges? I ended up making a land bridge through the swamp to connect the property and planted it to clovers and grass. Would you hunt on that like a travel corridor?View post →

Rolling and Cultipacking Seed Beds

Rolling and Cultipacking
Hey Bill, Minnesotan here,...and I've been a very successful Big and Beasty plot builder in recent years and have always rolled the seed in after broadcasting for good seed to soil contact , but this year I have a new plot that is very clay based and can get rather firm if not hard when I roll it if it gets dry out. My question is how vital is the rolling for contact on a plot that is very level , and loose ,....it is disced up very nicely at the moment. I plan on seeding second or third weekend in July with a forecasted rain approaching,.. but Im wondering if I could just freshen up the plot with a discing and simply seed it. If I roll it after seeding Im concerned it could become very compacted and hard being so clay based.View post →

Best Food Plot Shape

Best Food Plot Shape
I have an upcoming timber harvest that includes some clear cuts in the timber that I’ll use as food plots. The each opening will be about one acre. I’ll have occasional access to a dozer and tractor mower. The area has some ag fields but no other food plots. Should I use the entire opening for food and try to pinch them down near a stand site or keep them 20 yards wide like you recommend for kill plots?View post →

My Plans for the 2022 Deer Season

2022 Deer Season
Hi Bill, I have been curious about how this upcoming season is looking for you. I have been trying my best to keep up with podcast from Exodus and Midwest Whitetail on what you have been up to. I understand that you have bought a new farm closer to where you grew up and I guess I’m just wondering what you are expecting, are you planning on still hunting the lease you had or mainly focusing on this new farm. I would love to know more on what you were looking for in this case or if it was just something to start new with. Thank you, KodyView post →

Buying Hunting Land with a Home Site in the Middle

Buying Hunting Land
I currently own 80 acres (51 tillable 29 woods) and recently bought the old farm house on it in a short sale. The landowner next to me owns 97 acres (57 tillable 40 woods with a nice house). He allows me to hunt there and have become great friends. He would like for me to buy the farm. The house would sit right in the middle of the combined 178 acres. I don't "need" the house but would be a great place to bring the family on weekends. He won't sell the acreage without the house. My farm is paid for and the combined income for cash rent will eventually pay for the farm. Questions: 1) Thoughts of having a house in the middle of the property vs on the fringe, 2) thoughts on investment side of buying acreage with house if don't "need" the house and with in being in middle of property renting and cutting out house and few acres doesnt seem appealing to me. Land rarely comes up for sale around me and with this connecting to me.., it seems like my one chance buying this farm. I'm trying to dream big to eventually buy this farm then the 40 acres from the other adjacent landowner. thoughtsView post →

Using Redneck Trailer Blinds

Redneck Trailer Blinds
Hello Bill, I recently purchased a Redneck blind with the thought of using it in two locations that are near each other. For the majority of the year, I plan on having it placed in the woods at the head of a large ditch to serve me for the archery season. Once the rut is over, or my archery tag is filled, I plan on moving it to the higher ground for my wife to hunt out of for the shotgun season - the move is roughly 80 yards up the hill to the peak of the ridge so she can cover other areas. My question is do you feel that making this short move in the woods will considerably disturb movement? If not, any suggestions on doing this? I plan on using my farm tractor with forks to lift the blind and make the move. Thanks much Bill.View post →
